Israel needs an Emergency Unity Government. However, the assumption that Netanyahu must lead it – is false.
Netanyahu is responsible for the calamity that befell us on Saturday, his hands are soaked with the blood of the victims. Ergo, Netanyahu must resign.
Some might say: Now is not the time for a leadership change. Yet, there was a time in history it was. It was when the United Kingdom, amid World War II, changed its leadership, when Winston Churchill took power. From 10 Downing St, Churchill turned the tide of war and lead the Allies to victory over Nazi Germany.
In early May 1940, the Wehrmacht was gradually taking over Norway. The British government, led by Neville Chamberlain, barely survived a confidence vote in the Commons, and it was evident that it was nearing its demise.
On May 10, 1940, while the Germans were swiftly moving south, through the Low Countries, the Labour Party announced that they're willing to enter into a coalition government with the Conservatives, ONLY if a new Prime Minister will be appointed, to the wartime. And so, Churchill moved in to 10 Downing St.
These events unfolded during the Battle of France, the primary battle for Britain. the Allies were heading to a crushing defeat. British forces were retreating to Dunkirk, desperately trying to avoid surrender, while back in the British Isles, citizens began preparing for a German invasion.
This was the low point of the war for the Brits, and some were even contemplating surrendering. nontheless, no one thought to leave politics aside. On the contrary, they actively sought a new leadership.
As was the case for 1940 Britain, it is for 2023 Israel. It is crystal clear that Benjamin Netanyahu is unfit for leadership. Had he any dignity, Netanyahu would’ve announced that he'd resign as soon as the war ends. But Netanyahu always values his personal benefit over national interests.
Gantz and Lapid must demand that their entry to any unity government will ONLY happen if Netanyahu resigns, Minister of Defence, Gallant, is appointed as interim PM, and snap elections must be held as the war ends.
